Frost at Shibden

Frost at Shibden (2025)

Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold leaf and gold thread.

Shibden Hall in Halifax dates back to the 15th Century. It was the home of Anne Lister from 1791 – 1840. The view is from the woods behind the lily pond, up to the house. The tiles at the bottom of the picture show details and designs taken from inside the hall. The birds are from fragments of much older stained glass, set in the window of the central hall.

It used to be that only everyone in Calderdale knew about Shibden Hall, but In recent years it's fame has spread thanks to the Tv series 'Gentleman Jack'. It's a beautiful place, but it also has an amazing park which, if you can get to it when the snow is down, is the best place for sledging! I've not been for years now my small children have grown into big children. But for my eldest, the near calamitous sledging with a reckless Daddy (when Mummy got really cross) will stay with her forever! For the twins the residing memory will be going out in the rowing boats with Nancyann on one of their Bus adventures.
