Fountain Street

Fountain Street (2023)

Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, coloured pencil, gold leaf and gold thread

Painted for 'HOME' – a solo exhibition at Heart Gallery, Hebden Bridge.

I think Fountain Street is one of Hebden Bridge’s iconic streets and I’ve often wanted to paint it, but couldn’t work out how. Then, whilst walking on an early January morning (heading up hill in search of a little light!) I saw this over and across the canal. The streets behind Market Street were getting the winter sun, but the valley bottom is still in shade (no sun there until the end of January). When Nancyann collected the twins from Central Street School they would walk to the Co-op for a box of ice creams (a Wednesday treat), and then up Fountain Street, which they called ‘Pussy Cat Street’ as there were several friendly cats happy to be petted, before heading to the park. So ‘Pussy Cat Street’ or ‘Ice Cream Walk’ were other suggestions for the title of this painting!
