Byland

Byland (2022)

Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread.

Painted for 'Whispering Ruins' – an exhibition of paintings based on North Yorkshire Abbeys at Chantry House Gallery, Ripley.

In Autumn 2021, I took a little road trip to draw abbeys in North Yorkshire. I’d never seen Byland Abbey before this. It was a misty weekday, and I had it all to myself. The tiled floors at Byland are the best preserved of any English monastery. They are covered with turf in winter to protect them. I love tiles. I have so many books on tile designs and I had no idea that these were here, so they made me very happy! I could’ve covered the whole of the paper with the designs.

Available as a signed limited edition print, hand-finished with gold leaf and gold thread. All prints are mounted and can be posted, unless purchased framed.

Finished dimensions: 51.5cm x 71cm
