Old Town Meadow

Old Town Meadow (2021)

Original media: Inks, gouache, acrylics, watercolour, pencil, 23 carat gold leaf and gold thread

Painted for ‘Woodland Paths & Grand Days Out', a solo exhibition at Bankfield Museum, Halifax.

Throughout the lock-down spring and summer of 2020, this meadow up at Old Town, above Hebden Bridge, was a regular haunt for me and the children. At the end of a day of home lessons we’d take a picnic or a flask and sit in the long grass, looking across the valley. It’s a nicely steep hill so the twins would race each other down. Everyone locally knows the meadow and calls it something different. We call it ‘Sarah Mason’s Field’ after a friend’s birthday picnic. It’s also the way to Gloria’s house on Sunday runs. ‘Freedom Fields’ for Nicki, who first let Aston off her lead there. For Fell Runners, it’s the last dreadful hill at the end of a 19 mile winter fell race called the Wadsworth Trog. This spring (2021) it glowed golden yellow with buttercups.
